LAWRENCE COUNTY, ILLINOIS FAMILY RECORD
Record of the James and Mildred Graham Family
Watercolor and ink on paper
Lukin, Lawrence County, Illinois
c. 1880
Condition: toning, water stains, losses, but the colors are still bright
A four-section family record surrounded by stenciled fruit and flowers, and with two US flags on top. Included are the parents and children of the Graham family.
Born in Ohio, James T. Graham (1826-1880) headed west, arriving in Marion County, Indiana by 1850. There he married Mildred Smithers (1831-1900) and the couple set up household, James working as a carpenter.
By 1860, the couple, now with four children, had relocated to Lukin, Illinois, where they remained, James working as a farmer (and probably doing carpentry work during the winter months). They had six children: William (1851-1923), Louis (1853-1939), John (1857-1939), Theodore (1859-1950), Martha (b. 1863), and Mildred (1866-1953).
