HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE GUNN COLLECTION AND ADDITIONS
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE UNCATALOGUED ITEMS
We are honored to offer the lifetime collection of Dr. Virginia Gunn for auction. Part One of the collection will be sold on September 28 during a live auction at our Whipple, Ohio salesroom with in-person, online, phone, and absentee bidding. Dr. Gunn, a longtime professor of clothing, textiles, and interiors at the University of Akron, accrued a diverse array of quilts, coverlets, samplers, needlework, historical costume, early photography, and more. She applied her passion for research and scholarship to the items she collected, identifying previously unknown makers and establishing important historical connections.
Although Gunn spent most of her adult life in her adopted state of Ohio, her early years were spent elsewhere. She was born in Arkansas, spent her childhood in Minnesota, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas. She taught home economics in New Haven, Connecticut while her husband earned his Ph.D. at the Yale Divinity School. Gunn continued her education while raising two sons, earning a Master’s degree in applied arts, clothing, textiles, and materials from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Akron, where she would spend the rest of her teaching career, and also served as the curator of the school’s costume and textile collection.
Gunn is nationally-known for her knowledge of quilts, coverlets, American costumes and textiles, and women’s history, and has frequently presented and published her research on the subjects. She called her involvement with the American Quilt Study Group “life-changing”, and she served on their board from 1984-1994 and as their President from 1990-1994. From 1994-2003 she served as editor for Uncoverings, an annual publication of AQSG research papers, and from 2004-2013 served on the scholarship review committee. In 2017 Gunn was honored with an induction into the Quilter’s Hall of Fame.
Much of Gunn’s research has been devoted to the history of decorative arts in her local community of Wayne County, Ohio. She is a founding member of the Wayne County Historical Society, co-chaired the Beall-Stibbs House restoration project, and has studied early photographers, quiltmakers and coverlet weavers that worked in the region during the 19th century, as well as collected examples of their work.
Given the size and quality of Gunn’s lifetime collections, we will be offering portions of her collections in multiple auctions to be held over the next 12-18 months. It is a privilege to handle such important collections and we hope that you’ll join us in celebrating her passion for these objects and the stories they tell.
